Characteristics

Plants 30-150 mm high. Corm globose or obovoid, 5-15 mm diam., rounded or crested below, tunics woody, split into curved or bent, grooved teeth below. Stem subterranean. Leaves 2 to 12, all evidently basal, terete-filiform, narrowly 4-grooved, 0.5-1.0 mm diam. Peduncles up to 5, semi-terete, recurved and widely spreading in fruit; outer bracts greenish or brownish, with narrow, brown-speckled, membranous margins, 8-22 mm long, closely veined (± 8 veins/mm), inner bracts with wide, colourless or brown-speckled membranous margins. Flowers yellow, apricot-, terracotta-coloured, dark old-rose or rosy pink, with or without dark blotches or streaks in throat, with greenish yellow or orange-yellow cup, outer tepals irregularly marked or striped on reverse; perianth tube funnel-shaped, 2-5 mm long; tepals oblanceolate to elliptic, 10-40 x 3-12 mm. Filaments 3-8 mm long, pilose basally or glabrescent; anthers 3-9 mm long, yellow. Style dividing opposite lower half of anthers. Capsules oblong, 10-15 mm long.

Leaves basal or sometimes basal and cauline, 100-500 x 0.5-1 mm. Bracts green or brownish green, inner with wide brown or speckled or sometimes colourless membranous margins. Flowers 15-50 mm long, deep old-rose to apricot or yellow, sometimes with dark blotches, cup greenish yellow or orange-yellow, outer segments on the backs brownish purple or irregularly marked or striped. Corm globose; tunic toothed at base and forming a short fibrous neck at apex. Leaves several, basal, 8–25 cm long, up to 1 mm wide, almost terete. Stem absent. Scapes 5–12 cm long. Outer bract narrowly triangular, c. 12 mm long, herbaceous; inner bract c. 10 mm long, herbaceous with scarious brown-striate margins. Perianth tube c. 3 mm long, striped dull yellow and purple; lobes narrowly obovate, acute, 1–1.4 cm long, pale orange-brown to terracotta; sepals dull purple outside. Filaments 3–4 mm long; anthers 3–4 mm long. Style 6–8 mm long; stigmas level with top of anthers. Capsules cylindrical, c. 1 cm long, on flexuose scape spreading at maturity.

Near Perth recorded growing beside a railway, roadway and on flats in seasonally damp, humic soils in woodland/shrubland; at Bunbury recorded growing in a tidal salt marsh and in humic grey sand in a weedy herbfield at the base of a low sand dune.
