Characteristics

Plants 50-200 mm high. Corm bell-shaped with circular basal rim, 5-10 mm diam., tunics woody, basal rim with clusters of converging fibrils. Stem subterranean or shortly aerial and exserted up to 20 mm. Leaves 3 to 5, all or lower 2 basal, subterete and narrowly 4-grooved, 0.5-1.5 mm diam., glabrous. Peduncles up to 3, subterete, green or reddish brown; outer bracts green, with narrow, colourless margins,17-30 mm long, finely ribbed (5 or 6 veins/mm), inner bracts with wide, brown-flecked membranous margins. Flowers carmine-red to deep rosy-pink with yellow or white cup finely streaked with black and with V-shaped marks at base, with black blotches in throat, outer tepals irregularly marked with red and yellow; perianth tube funnel-shaped, 5-7 mm long; tepals oblanceolate, 18-35(-50) x 9-15 mm. Filaments inserted in lower half of tube, 3-5 mm long, puberulous below, whitish; anthers 8-10 mm long, yellow. Style dividing between middle and apex of anthers, branches forked.

Plants 80-300 mm long. Corm bell-shaped, with minute fibril clusters on a circular basal ridge. Stem short, hidden, or up to 100 mm long. Basal leaves 2 or 3-4, filiform, 70-300 x c. 1 mm, grooves narrow. Bracts largely green or sometimes reddish; inner sometimes slightly shorter than the outer, with wide, brown-streaked or almost colourless membranous margins. Flowers 25-45 mm long, carmine-red to deep rosy-pink, with a large purple-black blotch on each segment in the throat, cup cream, with dark V-shaped markings near the base, outer segments with red and yellow irregular markings or purplish red. Perianth tube 5-7 mm long; segments subequal or the inner slightly shorter and wider, 18-35 x 9-15 mm. Filaments 3-5 mm, widened and pilose at the bases; anthers c. twice as long. Style 10-15 mm.
Cormous geophyte, 8-12 cm, corms symmetrical, bell-shaped, fibrils convergent in clusters. Basal leaves 2-4. Flowers pink to red with black blotches at edge of cream-coloured cup.
