Characteristics

Plants 50-200 mm high. Corm globose, obliquely flattened toward base with crescent-shaped basal ridge, 8-15 mm diam., tunics splitting into fine parallel fibrils along ridge. Stem usually aerial, exserted up to 200 mm, elongating in fruit. Leaves 3 or 4, lowermost 1 basal, terete or compressed-cylindrical and narrowly 4-grooved, 1-2 mm diam., cauline leaves clustered at stem apex. Peduncles up to 8, up to 60 mm long, semiterete, sharply arcuate initially in fruit but later suberect; outer bracts green with narrow membranous margins, 12-20 mm long, striate or lightly ribbed (5 or 6 veins/mm), inner bracts submembranous in lower half and green or flushed maroon above, central portion sometimes conspicuously brown-spotted, with broad membranous margins usually streaked or speckled with brown. Flowers cadmium-or golden-yellow with slender dark lines in cup, rarely cream-coloured with golden-yellow cup, outer tepals frequently irregularly marked brown on reverse; perianth tube funnel-shaped, 3-5 mm long; tepals oblanceolate to obovate, 18-30 x 6-14 mm. Filaments 5-7 mm long, pilose basally, yellow; anthers 5-7 mm long, at first joined apically. Style dividing at or beyond anther tips, branches 2 mm long, divided halfway. Capsules ellipsoid or shortly cylindric, ± 10 mm long.

Plants 200-600 mm long. Basal leaf filiform, 200-600 x 1-2 mm, grooves rather narrow. Inner bract submembranous, greenish in the middle of the upper half, with wide colourless or brown-streaked or speckled membranous margins. Flowers (20-)30-40 mm long, bright golden or cadmium-yellow, with slender dark lines in the cup, outer perianth segments frequently with irregular brown markings on the backs. Perianth tube slightly shorter and wider. Style 12-18 mm; stigmas at or above the anther tips.
Similar to R. flava but flowers orange-yellow with dark lines in cup.
