Characteristics

Plants 100-200 mm high. Corm obliquely flattened at base with horseshoe-shaped basal rim, 8-10 mm diam., tunics woody, basal rim with clusters of converging fibrils. Stem subterranean or aerial and exserted up to 80 mm. Leaves ± 3, lower 2 basal, subterete and narrowly 4-grooved, ± 1 mm diam., glabrous. Peduncles up to 2, subterete, reddish brown; outer bracts green, with narrow, colourless margins,18-28 mm long, finely ribbed (5 or 6 veins/mm), inner bracts with wide, colourless or brown-flecked membranous margins. Flowers carmine-red, outer tepals irregularly marked with red and yellow; perianth tube funnel-shaped, 5-6 mm long; tepals oblanceolate, 22-35 x 8-12 mm. Filaments inserted in middle of tube, ± 5 mm long, glabrous, reddish; anthers 8-10 mm long, golden-yellow. Style dividing at or shortly above apex of anthers, branches forked.

Corm with a crescent-shaped basal ridge forming an almost complete circle, with minute fibril groups on the ridge. Stem usually shortly extended, 40-80 mm long. Basal leaves 2, 200-350 x 0.7 mm. Flowers carmine-red without any markings inside. Perianth segments 8-12 mm wide. Filaments glabrous; anthers almost twice as long as the filaments. Style 15-18 mm long.
