Plants 50-200 mm high. Corm ovoid, 5-10 mm diam., oblique with crescent-shaped basal ridge, tunics woody, usually minutely pitted, with clusters of converging fibrils on basal ridge. Stem subterranean or rarely aerial and exserted up to 100 mm. Leaves 3 to 6, lower 2 basal or all seemingly so in short-stemmed forms, terete-filiform, narrowly 4-grooved, 0.5-1.5 mm diam. Peduncles up to 5, semi-terete, erect or suberect in fruit; outer bracts green with narrow colourless membranous margins, 8-25 mm long, striate (5or 6 veins/mm), inner bracts with wide, usually colourless or rarely brown-flecked membranous margins. Flowers yellow or pale apricot-coloured with orange-yellow cup and sometimes arrow-shaped dark markings in throat extending to base of cup as dark lines or reduced to median dark line; perianth tube funnel-shaped, 3-7 mm long; tepals oblanceolate, 8-35 x 3-10 mm.
