Characteristics

Plants 50-150 mm high. Corm globose, rounded, 10-20 mm diam., oblique, tunics woody, splitting into curved teeth below. Stem subterranean. Leaves 4 to 9, basal, compressed-terete, arcuate or suberect, X-shaped and broadly 4-grooved to H-shaped with median ribs winged, 2-5 mm diam. Peduncles up to 3, angled, recurving but suberect in fruit; outer bracts green with narrow, colourless or brown-speckled membranous margins, 160-25 mm long, closely and heavily ribbed (8 to 10 veins/mm), usually with stouter midvein in upper half, inner bracts 2-keeled with stouter veins on keels, with colourless or brown-flecked membranous margins. Flowers cup-shaped, shiny carmine-pink with yellow cup and reddish black blotches in throat, extended as median line into cup, outer tepals with yellow longitudinal stripes and dark feathering on reverse; perianth tube cup-shaped, 3.0-5.5 mm long; tepals obovate, 25-50 x 10-17 mm long. Filaments inserted at base of tube, 4-6 mm long, pilose at base, yellow or purple to black; anthers 8-11 mm long, apically joined at first, yellow. Style dividing opposite middle of anthers, branches forked. Capsules oblong to subglobose, 8-10 mm long.

Plants 120-250 mm long. Corm with curved basal teeth. Stem short or sometimes up to 90 mm long, hidden. Leaves somewhat swollen, arcuate or suberect, 100-250 x 1.5-5.0 mm, the rib margins often widened into 8 narrow longitudinal wings or ridges. Peduncles 50-150 mm long. Bracts green, outer with narrow membranous margins, inner with wider, minutely speckled, colourless membranous margins and small tips. Flowers 30-60 mm long, shiny carmine-rose, with a reddish black blotch on each segment, cup yellow with 6 dark lines, outer segments yellowish on the backs with 5-7 longitudinal lines and fine feathered veining. Perianth tube cup-shaped, 3.0-5.5 mm long; segments shortly oblanceolate, 25-50 x 10-17 mm. Filaments free, 4-6 mm, purple or yellow; anthers 8-11 mm long, bright yellow. Style 9-12 mm long.
Cormous geophyte, 80-120 mm tall, corm round at base, with curved acuminate teeth. Leaves several, curved, fleshy, broadly 4-grooved. Flowers pink with dark blotches at edges of yellow cup; outer bract keeled above with narrow hyaline margins, inner bract 2-keeled, with colourless or speckled dry margins; fruiting peduncles first recurved, later suberect.
Leaves somewhat swollen, with rib margins often widened, up to 5 mm wide. Flowers pinkish red, each segment with a dark blotch on a pale violet zone, and below that a yellow blotch. Anthers up to 14 mm long.
