Characteristics

Plants 20-100(-150) mm high. Corm subglobose, oblique with crescent-shaped basal ridge, 8-10 mm diam., tunics splitting into fine parallel fibrils along ridge; stem subterranean. Leaves (2)3 to 10(-15), lower mostly falcate, H-shaped in section, lower leaves 2-5(-7) mm wide but narrowed toward base, uppermost leaves generally narrower and as little as 1 mm wide, lateral ribs reduced and median (apparently marginal) ribs produced into flange-like wings, variously and sparsely or densely ciliolate, ciliate or ciliolate-ciliate along margins of wings or subglabrous. Peduncles up to 5, subterete, hirsute or villous, spreading but ultimately suberect in fruit; outer bracts green with brownish, brown-streaked or colourless margins widening upward to prominent membranous tip, 10-18 mm long, finely striate (± 5 veins/mm), hirsute or villous in lower half or throughout, inner bracts green with broad brown-speckled or colourless margins, hirsute along veins or rarely glabrous. Flowers pale lilac to magenta, sometimes with blue tips, rarely white, with small yellow or violet cup with darker violet blotch or band in throat, outer tepals greenish with purple feathering on reverse; perianth tube cup-shaped, 3-6 mm long; tepals obovate to elliptical, 12-28 x 5-8 mm. Filaments 3-4 mm long, minutely pilose basally, whitish; anthers 2-6 mm long, suberect to apically incurved, purple with reddish or orange pollen or rarely yellow with yellow pollen. Style dividing between base and apices of anthers, branches 2-5 mm long, deeply forked, whitish. Capsules oblong, 8-10 mm long.

Bracts green, outer with hairs on some veins, with narrow (outer) and wide (inner) membranous margins and tips. Flowers 16-35 mm long, violet-rose to lilac or rarely salmon-pink, cup violet or greenish yellow, with a violet blotch or transverse band on each segment in the throat. Anthers 2-6 mm long, incurved, circinal or sub-erect, purple or golden-yellow, 2-6 mm long, pollen brick-coloured, orange or yellow. Style 5-12 mm long; stigmas reaching below to just above the anther tips. Capsules ellipsoid or subglobose, on curved peduncles which straighten somewhat later.
Cormous geophyte, stem 50-100 mm tall, corm with an oblique basal ridge. Leaves several, hairy, 4-winged (H-shaped in cross section). Flowers on hairy peduncles, rose to lilac or pink with dark bands at edge of yellow cup; fruiting peduncles curved, later straight; bracts green, outer hairy below with hyaline margins and tip, inner with wide hyaline margins.
