Plants (50-)80-150 mm high. Corm globose, rounded, 10-20 mm diam., oblique, tunics woody, splitting into curved teeth below. Stem subterranean. Leafs 1, rarely up to 3 but then additional leaves much reduced, basal, compressed-terete, arcuate or spreading, subfistulose, broadly 4-grooved, 2-5 mm diam. Peduncles up to 3, angled; outer bracts green with narrow, colourless or brown-speckled membranous margins, 20-30 mm long, closely and heavily ribbed (8 to 10 veins/mm), usually with stouter midvein in upper half, inner bracts 2-keeled with stouter veins on keels, with colourless or brown-flecked membranous margins. Flowers cup-shaped, shiny orange to reddish orange with black blotch above yellow in throat, outer tepals with dark feathering on reverse; perianth tube cup-shaped, 3-5 mm long; tepals obovate-cuneate, (28-)30-45(-50) x 10-20 mm long. Filaments inserted at base of tube, 5-6 mm long, minutely pilose, blackish; anthers 9-12 mm long, apically joined at first, yellow. Style dividing opposite middle of anthers, branches forked.

Flowers orange-red with black and yellow blotches at the edge of the cup; outer bract keeled with dry, narrow, white margins, inner bract 2-keeled with hyaline margins; fruiting peduncles straight.
