Characteristics

Plants 80-100 mm high. Corm globose, rounded, 7-15 mm diam., oblique, tunics woody, splitting into curved teeth below. Stem subterranean. Leaves 3 to 5, all basal, terete, narrowly 4-grooved, 0.8-2.0 mm diam. Peduncles up to 4, terete, suberect in fruit; outer bracts green with narrow, black-blotched membranous margins and brown-flecked membranous apices, 17-30 mm long, closely and heavily ribbed (8 to 10 veins/mm), often with stouter mid-vein in upper half, inner bracts 2-keeled with stouter veins on keels, with colourless or brown-flecked membranous margins. Flowers cup-shaped, bright yellow with black, 3-toothed markings in throat and black flecks at base, outer tepals blackish on reverse; perianth tube cup-shaped, 2-4 mm long; tepals obovate, 20-35 x 6-10 mm long. Filaments inserted at base of tube, 4-5 mm long, pilose; anthers 6-9 mm long, apically joined at first. Style dividing opposite upper half of anthers, branches forked. Capsules oblong, 15 mm long.

Bracts with narrow, dark brown, brown-dotted, or sometimes colourless membranous margins. Flowers 25-40 mm long, buttercup-yellow or ochre-yellow, with a purplish brown or black blotch on each segment, outer segments brown or purplish brown on the backs. Perianth tube shallow, saucer-shaped, 2-4 mm deep; segments 20-35 x 6-10 mm. Filaments free, 4-5 mm; anthers 6-9 mm long. Style 8-10 mm long.
Cormous geophyte, 4-8 cm, corms rounded at base with coarse, bent teeth. Basal leaves several. Flowers yellow with dark brown markings, inner bracts 2-keeled.
