Characteristics

Plants much-branched ascending shrublets 250-300 mm high. Roots fibrous. Main branch woody, about 5 mm in diameter at the base, longitudinally fissured and with dark brown to blackish bark, the younger branches about 2.5 mm in diameter, glaucous; internodes 5-20 mm apart, surface smooth. Leaves fleshy, subterete to somewhat laterally compressed, linear-lanceolate, falcate, 22-34 x 2 mm, laterally sides 2.5 mm high: adaxial surface flat, abaxial surface rounded, surface glaucous green, minutely papillate; apex acute, incurved, mucronate. Flowers solitary, at branch ends. 70-80 mm in diameter; on pedicels 15-23 mm long. Receptacle top-shaped to globose 8 mm high and 8 mm in diameter at the top: sepals 5, triangular-acuminate, slightly unequal in length: 2 inner with translucent margins 8 x 4 mm; outer three triangular-acuminate 12-16 x 4 mm. Petaloid staminodes (in three series, persistent after flowering) numerous, linear-lanceolate, ascending-spreading, rose-to cerise-pink. 35-40 x 1.5 mm. apices acute, persistent after flowering: filamentous staminodes absent; filaments in about 3-4 series, 3 mm long, the base with dense translucent trichomes 0.5 mm; anthers 1 x 0.3 mm yellowish to cream, not completely overtopping stigmas. Gynoecium convex at the top, 7 mm diam., with 5 raised obtuse sutures, green, elevated up to 1 mm: nectaries narrow, crenulated, continuous and surrounding ovary. Stigmas 5, ascending, triangular subulate, 2.5 mm long, arising from the sunken centre between sutures or lobes, tapering, papillate and partially concealed by stamens. Capsule 5-locular, hygroscopic, top-shaped. 7-8 mm diam., 5-7 mm deep; top rounded, open capsule up to 8-12 mm diameter; valve wings and closing body absent, expanding keels about 2 mm long and 0.7 mm in diameter, parallel at base diverging widely, acute and incurved at apices, once opened the capsule remains open; covering membranes ascending. Seeds pear-shaped. 1.5 x 0.9 mm, reddish-brown, tuberculate, flattened.
