Characteristics

Annual. Culms 5–30 (–60) cm high; mid-culm nodes hidden by leaf sheaths. Leaves scattered along culms; basal sheaths pilose, with spreading hairs c. 0.9 mm long (upper sheaths glabrous); ligule to 1.5 mm long; blade 11.5–18 cm long, 3–8 mm wide, glabrous or with hairs to 1.5 mm long. Inflorescences 1.5–6 cm long, with axes puberulous. Spikelets 2.5–4.5 mm long, with 3–5 (–7) florets, with sterile florets (reduced to lemma only or with rudimentary palea) distal to bisexual florets. Glumes narrowly ovate, with intercostal regions glabrous or hirsute: lower glume c. 3/4 length of upper glume, (1.5–) 1.9–2.6 (–3.5) mm long, membranous, 1-nerved, with midnerve scaberulous or hirsute; upper glume (2–) 2.6–3.2 (–4) mm long, prominently 3-nerved, with midnerve scaberulous. Callus glabrous. Basal lemma narrowly elliptic, 2.3–3 (–3.5) mm long, shortly bifid, 5-nerved; awn 0.5–2 mm long. Palea narrowly ovate, c. 2/3 length of lemma, bifid, with keels prolonged into bristles c. 0.75 mm long. Anthers (0.2–) 0.6 mm long.
