Characteristics

Annual. Culms 2–39 cm high; mid-culm nodes exposed. Leaves scattered along culms; basal sheaths puberulous, upper sheaths often glabrous; ligule to 2 mm long, toothed to erose; blade to 11 cm long, 1–3 (–5) mm wide, glabrous or with hairs to c. 0.25 mm long, margins scabrous or ciliolate. Inflorescences 7–65 mm long, with axes glabrous. Spikelets 3.2–5.1 mm long, with 2–5 bisexual florets, without incomplete florets. Glumes narrowly ovate: lower glume equal to or longer than upper glume, 2.6–3.8 mm long, 1–3-nerved, densely hirsute; upper glume 2.6–3.4 mm long, obscurely 3-nerved, with midnerve hirsute and intercostal regions glabrous or puberulous toward margins. Callus villous. Basal lemma narrowly elliptic, (2–) 2.9–3.5 mm long, acute or bifid, 5-nerved; awn 1–5 mm long. Palea narrowly elliptic or narrowly obovate, 2/3 length of lemma, bidentate. Anthers 0.4–0.6 mm long.
