Characteristics

Leaves decussate or 3-nate, sessile or attenuate into a very short petiole, the lower ones variable in form and size from triangular (3 × 1 mm.) to broadly ovate (3 × 2·5 mm.), the upper ones ovate (c. 6 × 3 mm.), obtuse at the apex, slightly cordate at the base, penninerved.

Flowers 4-merous, axillary, sessile, in spikes at the apices of stems and branches, dimorphic-heterostylous; bracteoles minute, c. 0·25 mm. long, scarious, subulate.
Stems up to 8 cm. (or longer), 4-gonous, reddish, rooting at the nodes; internodes up to 10 mm. long, becoming progressively shorter towards the apex.
Petals 4, c. 2 × 1·5 mm., persistent, deep pink, ovate, subacute or obtuse at the apex, roundish or attenuate towards the base, slightly clawed.
Calyx campanulate; lobes c. 1 × 1·25 mm., deltate; tube 1·5 mm. long; nectariferous ring with 4 free scales opposite the petals.
Short-styled flowers: stamens with filaments c. 4 mm. long, long-exserted; style included, c. 1 mm. long.
Long-styled flowers: stamens included; style c. 3·5–4 mm. long, exceeding the lobes by c. 2 mm.
Stamens 4, inserted just above the base of the tube, with anthers c. 0·5 mm. long.
Creeping annual or more probably perennial herb with underground runners.
Capsule 2-valved, c. 2·25 × 1·5 mm., included, ellipsoid.
Seeds c. 0·5 mm. long, brownish, elliptic in outline.
