Characteristics

Leaves up to 9 × 2·5 mm., decussate, sessile, the lower ones linear, those of the middle and the uppermost ones lanceolate or ovate-lanceolate, obtuse and sometimes emarginate at the apex, roundish at the base, inconspicuously penninerved.

Stem simple or branched at the base or towards the apex, thick, terete, green; internodes up to 8 mm. long, shorter than the leaves, very short towards the apex.
Flowers 4-merous, axillary, solitary, reddish, subsessile, 2-bracteolate at the base, the bracteoles scarious, subulate, c. half as long as the calyx.
Calyx c. 1 mm. long, campanulate; appendages 0; lobes c. 0·5 mm. broad and 0·45 long, triangular, apiculate.
Ovary c. 0·5 mm. in diameter, globose, 2-lobed, 2-locular; style c. 0·2 mm. long, with the stigma capitate.
Stamens 2–3, inserted ± at the middle of the calyx-tube, not exceeding the apices of the calyx-lobes.
Capsule (immature) c. 0·6 mm. in diameter, globose.
Annual erect herb up to 11 cm. high.
Roots slender, whitish, fasciculate.
