Cultivation

Origin: in Blacksburg, Va., by G.D. Oberle, Virginia Agr. Ext. Serv., Virginia Polytechnical Inst. & State Univ. Hilton × VPI 5 (Taylor × St. Regis). Cross made in 1958, selected in 1964, tested as VPI 14; introd. in 1972. Tree: larger than average; upright; very vigorous; winter hardiness above average, tolerant to fluctuating winter temperatures; very productive. Tolerant to anthracnose, cane blight, and leaf spot. Fruit: red; large; medium conic to long conic; medium red with dusky overcast, attractive; firm, small drupelets, texture fine, flavor aromatic; ripens 25 June to 15 July, somewhat hidden.
