Characteristics

Apparently a dwarf bramble with the flowering stems covered, especially thickly above, with ochreous, ± spreading hairs interspersed with many small, hooked or straightly deflexed prickles up to 2 mm. long.. Leaves trifoliolate (or simple within the inflorescence); leaflets broadly ovate or obovate, 2.8–4 × 2.4–3.6 cm., or the lateral ones more elliptic or obovate-elliptic and not exceeding 3 × 1.8 cm., acute to very obtuse or rounded, basally cuneate to rounded, with serratures up to 2 mm. deep, all jagged and sometimes markedly so, green on both surfaces but darker above with ochreous hairs and more densely hairy on the midrib and nerves below, with the intervening tissues glabrous.. Stipules linear or linear-lanceolate.. Inflorescence apparently leafy, short and congested, 6 × 3 cm., of obscure shape, consisting of a few, small, axillary flowers borne singly on pedicels up to 5 (?–10) mm. long.. Calyx 7–8 mm. long, deeply divided into ovate-lanceolate, caudate-acuminate lobes ± 6.5 mm. long, covered with long ochreous hairs on the outer side, tomentose within, slightly aculeolate, apparently clasping.. Petals white, 3.75 × 2.8 mm., broadly ovate, somewhat truncate.. Carpels glabrous.. Fruit about 1.2 cm. long, “red when unripe and perhaps also when ripe.”
More
Leaves 4–7·5 x 2·5–7·5 cm., ternate or the uppermost ones simple, rather stiff and leathery in texture; lateral leaflets sessile, terminal ones with petiolule 0·5–1·5 cm. long; petiole and rhachis densely setose and prickly like the stems.
Leaflets ovate-acute to broadly elliptic or obovate; superior surface green, appressed-pilose especially between the nerves; inferior surface paler, pilose on nerves but glabrous between, with midrib and lateral nerves minutely prickly.
Flowering branches pale green to purplish, covered with short stiff setose hairs (1 mm. long or less) especially distally and prickly; prickles 1–3 mm. long, ochraceous, slender, straight or deflexed.
Inflorescences terminal leafy, 3–10 cm. long, ± cylindrical, few-flowered; peduncles and pedicels short, densely villous-setose; bracts often exceeding pedicels.
Fruits 0·8–1·0 cm. long, globose, red or orange when ripe; carpels 3–3·5 mm. long, relatively few in number, glabrous.
Stipules 10–20 x 1–2·5 mm., linear-acuminate or lanceolate, often quite leaf-like in colour and texture.
Calyx greenish to brownish, villous and prickly, divided into triangular-acuminate lobes c. 8 mm. long.
Petals a little shorter than sepals, broadly spathulate, white.
Leaf margins finely to coarsely serrate.
