Characteristics

A stout scrambling shrub with reddish-green stems covered, especially thickly above, with loosely-spreading, yellowish hairs interspersed with small, hooked or deflexed prickles scarcely reaching 3 mm. in length.. Leaves trifoliolate; leaflets broadly ovate to ovate-oblong, 8–11.5 × 4–7.5 cm., obtuse or acute, scarcely acuminate, basally rounded to cordate; terminal leaflet often largest and broader than the lateral ones, all serrate or obscurely biserrate with shallow serratures usually less than 1 mm. deep, dark green and softly hairy above with yellowish, ± appressed hairs, more densely hairy beneath with fulvous or whitish, somewhat shining hairs.. Inflorescence a rather stout, pyramidal panicle up to 26 × 18 cm., the branchlets widely ascending, the axis, peduncles and pedicels densely and softly ochreous-villous.. Flowers rather large and showy, ± 2.5 cm. diameter.. Calyx ochreous-or whitish-tomentose, 9–11 mm. long, deeply divided into ovate or ovate-oblong caudate-acuminate lobes 7–10 mm. long, spreading at anthesis.. Petals white or pale pink, ± round but abruptly narrowed at the base, 11 × 10 mm. long; margin wavy, especially at the apex.. Carpels densely villous.. Fig. 3/1, 2, p. 31.
