Characteristics

A scrambling shrub.. Flowering stems obscurely or obtusely angled, tomentose, with or without intermixed long spreading hairs (sometimes in preponderance), bearing ± abundant straight or decurved prickles 1.5–4 mm. long.. Leaves imparipinnate or the upper ones trifoliolate or simple, ovate, ovate-oblong, or oblong-elliptic, 4–8 × 2.2–5.5 cm., varying from very acutely acuminate to obtuse, basally broadly cuneate to subcordate, sharply and irregularly serrate, the lamina markedly crinkled due to depression of the nerves and veins, rather sparsely pilose above with long hairs, and with similar hairs on the nervature beneath, varying to more densely hairy on both surfaces.. Inflorescence a nearly leafless pyramidal panicle, up to 30 × 20 cm., with the axes and peduncles hairy as the stems; pedicels and calyx-lobes greenish-white-tomentose.. Calyx-lobes lanceolate or ovate-lanceolate, 5–19 mm. long, variably long-caudate.. Petals rose or pale pink, 9–11 mm. long, 8–10 mm. broad, terminally ± rounded.. Carpels tomentose.
