Characteristics

A scrambling shrub, up to 6 m. tall (fide Hauman), producing long hanging branches.. Flowering stems tomentose or glabrescent, red or green, pruinose (? always), with many hooked prickles markedly dilated at the base.. Leaves imparipinnate (usually 2-jugate) or trifoliolate within the inflorescence; leaflets broadly ovate, ovate-lanceolate, or elliptic, 4–12 × 2.5–6.5 cm., acute, sometimes acuminate, basally shortly cuneate to subcordate; the terminal leaflet larger than the lateral ones or about equal to the basal pair, all serrate or biserrate, the teeth rather shallow but acute, commonly 1.5 mm. deep, sparsely pubescent to glabrous above, white-or grey-tomentose varying to green and glabrous beneath (except usually for pilose midrib and nerves); terminal petiolule 1–2.5 cm. long; lateral petiolules not usually exceeding 1 cm. long; nervature prominent below.. Inflorescence consisting of terminal and axillary, often few-flowered, open racemes; pedicels white-tomentose to glabrous, prickly, 1–4 cm. long.. Calyx rather variable in length, 1.2–2 cm. long, deeply divided into lanceolate or narrowly ovate-lanceolate apically acuminate or caudate-acuminate lobes 1–1.8 cm. long, ± whitish-tomentose.. Petals showy, white to pale rose, often ± half again as long as the calyx-lobes, sometimes broader than long.. Carpels glabrous, or hairy at the apex.. Fruit ± 2 cm. long, deep red when young, later black or deep purple, edible.
