Plants caespitose; innovation buds intravaginal. Culms 10–50 cm high. Inflorescences ovate or spherical. Spikelets 6–14 mm long, with 3–7 florets, appearing plump. Glumes slightly exceeding florets; lower glume 6–11 mm long, c. 4 mm wide. Lemma: body 3–4.4 mm long, villous between the rows of tufts; upper row of hair tufts complete, with the indumentum below as a large dorsal clump which equals the upper row; lobes shorter than body; setae 0–0.5 mm long, shorter than lobes; awn 2–4.2 mm long, equalling setae; awn column straight or with 2 twists (rarely 1), shorter than lobes. Palea obovate, 3.5–4.2 mm long, broad, 1–3 times as long as wide, exceeding lemma sinus. Anthers 0.5–2 mm long. Caryopsis 1.7–2 mm long.
Occurs in sclerophyll scrub and eucalypt woodlands, grassy hillsides, in heavy soils;frequently common where the grass is cut by grazing or mowing, not common inlank grass.
