Characteristics

Plants caespitose; innovation buds intravaginal. Culms to 40 cm high. Leaves glabrous or villous (but young leaves only sparsely villous); blade persistent, probably expanded. Inflorescences obliquely ovate, 1–4 cm long; branches scaberulous. Spikelets 7–10 mm long, with 2–4 florets. Glumes exceeding florets; lower glume 7–11 mm long. Lemma: body 1.4–2.4 mm long, with villous tufts; lobes as long as or marginally longer than body, with setae 0–1.8 mm long; awn 5.4–8.2 mm long, with column tightly twisted; indumentum in a complete upper row; indumentum in lower row of marginal and some dorsal tufts, equalling or not reaching upper row (marginal hairs are longer). Palea 2.6–4.2 mm long, narrow, 3–5 times as long as wide. Caryopsis 1.3–1.5 mm long.
