Characteristics

Plants caespitose, single, or with several shoots; innovation buds intravaginal. Culms 30–100 cm high. Inflorescences linear-lanceolate; branches villous or scaberulous. Spikelets 15–21 mm long, with 3–6 florets. Glumes slightly to substantially exceeding florets, green with reddish margins, drying reddish; lower glume 14–20 mm long, 3–4 mm wide. Lemma: body 3.3–4.2 mm long, glabrous to villous between the rows of tufts; both rows of hair tufts complete, with lower row equalling upper row; lobes longer than (to more than twice as long) body; setae 1–2.5 mm long, shorter than lobes; awn 11.9–15.5 mm long, exceeding setae; awn column tightly twisted, shorter than to exceeding lobes but shorter than setae. Palea linear to ovate, 5.8–8.5 mm long, narrow, 3–5 times as long as wide, much exceeding lemma sinus, not quite equalling lemma lobes. Anthers 0.7–2.5 mm long. Caryopsis 2.1–2.4 mm long.
