Plants caespitose; innovation buds intravaginal. Culms 45–75 cm high. Leaves cauline, glabrous; sheath mouth glabrous; blade usually rolled and stiff. Inflorescences widely paniculate, 4–13 cm long; branches from shorter than to longer than spikelets. Spikelets 7–12 mm long. Glumes slightly exceeding florets; lower glume 7–12 mm long. Lemma: body 1.4–1.9 mm long; lobes including setae 4–5.8 mm long; setae 1.5–2.5 mm long, exposed above lemma back hairs; awn 7–8.8 mm long. Palea 2.4–3.6 mm long, equalling awn knee. Anthers 0.9–1.6 mm long. Caryopsis 1.1–1.3 mm long.
