Plants caespitose, with stout bases, and generally a stout appearance; innovation buds intravaginal. Culms 15–45 cm high. Leaf blades thick. Inflorescences obliquely ovate. Spikelets 12–17 mm long, with 5–6 florets. Glumes slightly exceeding florets; lower glume 12–17 mm long, 2.5–3 mm wide. Lemma: body 2.4–3.7 mm long, with straight margins, villous or rarely glabrous between the rows of tufts; both rows of hair tufts complete, with lower row equalling or exceeding upper row; lobes longer than body, but not twice as long; setae 2–3.3 mm long, shorter than lobes; awn 7.5–10 mm long, exceeding setae; awn column tightly twisted, shorter than lobes. Palea obovate, 2.8–4.2 mm long, broad, 1–3 times as long as wide, slightly exceeding lemma sinus, glabrous between keels. Anthers 0.4–0.8 mm long. Caryopsis 1.8–2.1 mm long.
Grows in grassy clearings in subalpine woodland,or in subalpine grassland, often associated with rocky outcrops, also in subalpineheath, sometimes in alpine moors.
