Characteristics

Liane 1.8–4 m. or more long; young stems glabrous to densely spreading pilose with hairs ± 2.5 mm. long; older stems sparsely hairy, drying dark blackish purple.. Leaf-blades elliptic or oblong-elliptic, 7–15(–22.5) cm. long, 3–7.5(–12) cm. wide, narrowly and distinctly acuminate at the apex, cuneate to rounded at the base, glabrous save for a few sparse adpressed bristly hairs on the midrib above and main nerves beneath; reticulation of nerves scarcely apparent beneath; petioles 0.8–2.5(–6) cm. long, with ± adpressed bristly hairs; stipules rounded, 0.6–2 cm. long and wide, glabrous save for ciliate margins.. Inflorescence solitary, axillary, 6–28-flowered; peduncle 0.6–3.5 cm. long, glabrous; bracts large, rounded, 1–3.5 cm. long and wide, joined at the base for 2–4 mm., glabrous; flowers sessile, with hairs at base mixed with very small linear bracteoles.. Calyx glabrous outside; tube 1.2–2.8 cm. long; limb-tube up to 1.2(–1.8) cm. long, 5–7 mm. wide; teeth 5, triangular, 2–4(–6) mm. long, 2–3 mm. wide, ciliate.. Corolla white; tube 1.5–1.8 cm. long, 1 mm. wide, glabrous outside; lobes 5, ovate, 2 mm. long, 1 mm. wide, adpressed pilose outside, glabrous inside; throat pilose.. Stamens included.. Ovary ± glabrous.. Fruit red, subglobose, ± 9 mm. diameter.
