Characteristics

Liane, climber or straggling shrub, 1.2–4.5 m. long; stems rather slender, brown, ridged, with adpressed hairs and ± tomentose as well, the epidermis peeling on the older shoots.. Leaf-blades elliptic or oblong-elliptic, 4–13.5 cm. long, 1.7–6.3 cm. wide, shortly to distinctly acuminate at the apex, broadly cuneate to rounded at the base, subscabridly pilose above, with dense adpressed silky hairs on the venation beneath and with ± “rucked” tomentum between so that whole underside is pale and ± velvety; petiole 0.5–1.9 cm. long, densely hairy and tomentose; stipules leafy, ovate, 6–12 mm. long, 5.5–10 mm. wide, glabrous on inner surface, hairy outside, reflexed.. Flowers in axillary several–many-flowered paniculate clusters, ± sessile; pedicels 5 mm. long, densely hairy; bracts if present very small, not forming an involucre.. Calyx-tube subglobose, 1–1.5(–2.5) mm. long, densely hairy; tubular part of limb very short, 0.5 mm. long; lobes leafy, lanceolate, 4–6 mm. long, 1–1.5 mm. wide, glabrous inside, hairy outside and with long hairs on the margin.. Corolla white; tube 0.8–1.2 cm. long, hairy outside in upper half, glabrous beneath or sparsely hairy all over; lobes lanceolate, 2–3 mm. long, 0.8–1 mm. wide, glabrous inside, densely hairy outside.. Style 9 mm. long in long-styled flowers, 5 mm. long in short-styled flowers, the stigma-lobes 1.75–2 mm. long.. Fruits whitish when ripe with a pinkish juice, globose, 10 mm. in diameter, hairy, crowned with green calyx-lobes, the fruiting pedicels up to 1.2 cm. long.. Fig. 71/1–10.
