Tufted perennial 200-900 mm high; rhizomes short; basal sheaths usually without cross-veins; culms hard. Leaf blade 50-200 x 1-3 mm, subterete, convolute or tightly rolled or folded, strongly ribbed, occasionally papillose. Inflorescence cylindrical, spike-like, scanty, often interrupted, 20-160 mm long. Spikelet 1.5-2.2 mm long, ovate, laterally compressed, usually hairy; lower glume ± 1/2 as long as spikelet; upper glume 4/5 the spikelet length; lower floret male, palea almost as long as lemma; anthers 0.6-1.0 mm long.
