Characteristics

Slender almost glabrous annuals, in erect tufts, or decumbent and rooting at lower nodes. Leaf-sheath firmly membranous, rounded. Ligule 0.1-0.2 mm, a membranous, sparsely, short-ciliate rim. Collar hairs short. Leaf-blade 5-10 cm × 2.5-3-(4) mm, narrow-linear, rounded-truncate at base, tapered above, herbaceous, flat, midrib prominent, glabrous; margins very minutely scabrid, tip long, acuminate. Culm 40-60-(70) cm, slender, internodes glabrous. Panicle 3.5-8 cm ×c. 5 mm, spike-like, cylindric, erect, with densely crowded spikelets; rachis angular, glabrous; branches numerous, very short, closely appressed to adnate, with spikelets on short, glabrous pedicels widened at apex to minute, concave cup. Spikelets 2.5-3 mm, greyish green, elliptic, acute, ± gibbous. Glumes membranous, strongly nerved, very unequal, glabrous; lower 1.5-1.8 mm, (3)-5-nerved, upper 2.5-3 mm, 9-nerved, gibbous towards base. Lower floret Ø: lemma similar in texture to and ≈ upper glume, 7-9-nerved, oblong, obtuse, hardly inflated at base; palea < 1 mm, very narrow, stiff. Upper floret ☿: lemma c. 1.5 mm, elliptic, acute, very shining, cream, nerves not visible, thinly crustaceous, margins closely enfolding palea; palea of same texture as lemma but slightly shorter; anthers 0.6-0.8 mm, deep reddish purple; stigmas deep reddish purple; caryopsis c. 1.5 mm.
More
Tufted annual, 0.1-1.0 m high; basal leaves few; culms slender, 1.0-2.5 mm in diam., solid, decumbent or ascending, often with aerial roots. Leaf blade 20-200 x 1-7 mm, broadly linear-lanceolate and rigid, flat, glabrous or often pilose; leaf sheaths usually with auricles 1.5-2.5 mm long; ligule an unfringed membrane. Inflorescence a spike-like panicle, 10-130 mm long; pedicels smooth. Spikelets 2.7-3.1 mm long, laterally compressed, obtuse; glumes very unequal, dissimilar, distinctly ribbed with broad hyaline margins and apices, awnless; lower glume 1.0-1.5 mm long, 1/2 spikelet length, 3(-5)-nerved; upper glume equalling spikelet, gibbous, 7-9-nerved. Florets 2; lower floret male or sterile, palea 1.2-1.8 mm long; upper floret bisexual, lemma dorsally compressed, pallid, indurated, brittle, entire; anther 0.6 mm long. Flowering time Nov.-Apr.
Tufted annual 100-1 000 mm high; basal leaves few; culms slender, 1.0-2.5 mm in diameter, solid, decumbent or ascending; lower nodes often with aerial roots. Leaf blade 20-200 x 1-7 mm, broadly linear-lanceolate, rigid, flat, not ribbed or papillose, glabrous or often hairy; leaf sheaths auricles 1.5-2.5 mm long or absent. Inflorescence 10-130 mm long, spike-like, cylindrical to oblong; pedicels smooth. Spikelet (1.5)2.7-3.1 mm long, laterally compressed, obtuse, glabrous or hairy; glumes with broad hyaline margins and apices; lower glume 1.0-1.5 mm long, 1/2 the spikelet length, 3(-5)-nerved; upper glume equalling spikelet, 7-9-nerved; lower floret male or sterile; lower palea 0.5-1.8 mm long, much shorter than lemma; upper lemma pallid; anthers 0.6 mm long.
Annual. Culms slender, weakly ascending from a branching, decumbent base, 20–100 cm tall. Leaf sheaths slightly keeled; leaf blades linear, flat to loosely involute, 5–20 × 0.2–0.5 cm, apex acute; ligule 0.2–0.5 mm. Panicle spikelike, 11–16 × 0.3–0.5 cm, axis glabrous. Spikelets green or purplish green, lanceolate, laterally compressed, 2–2.8 mm, glabrous or papillose-hispid, obtuse; glumes ovate, herbaceous with broad hyaline margins and apex, lower glume 1/3–1/2 spikelet length, 3–7-veined; upper glume 7–11-veined; lower lemma as long as upper glume; palea small and hyaline; upper lemma yellowish, narrowly ovate, 1/2 spikelet length.
