Caespitose perennial; culms 30–100 cm. high, erect.. Leaf-blades linear, 6–20 cm. long, 2–6 mm. wide, loosely silky hairy.. Panicle cylindrical, 2–10 cm. long, dense or sometimes interrupted.. Spikelets elliptic, laterally compressed, 3–4 mm. long, silky pubescent all over; lower glume broadly ovate, ± 1/3 as long as the spikelet; upper glume papyraceous; lower floret male, its lemma a little shorter than the upper glume and bearing a prominent transverse fringe of hairs in the upper half, its palea about 2/3 as long as the floret.
