Characteristics

Leaves opposite or subopposite (alternate on climbing shoots), petiolate; lamina dark green and ± glossy above, paler and dull below, (5)7·5–15(18) × (2)3·5–6·2(8) cm., oblong or elliptic-oblong to obovate, ± shortly acuminate at the apex, with margin shallowly rounded-denticulate, cuneate to rounded at the base, coriaceous, with c. 8–11 lateral nerves and densely reticulate venation more prominent below than above; petiole 5–10(13) mm. long, with margins straight; stipules very small, caducous.

Sepals yellow-green ? with pale margin, unequal, broadly ovate to subcircular, free, the outer ones c. 1 mm. long, subacute, with ciliolate-denticulate margin, the inner ones subpetaloid, c. 2 mm. long, rounded, with entire margin.
Flowers 2–9(18), bisexual, in axillary sessile or shortly pedunculate fascicles; buds 2–3 mm. long, ovoid-conic to subcylindric; peduncle absent or up to 2 mm. long; pedicels 4–8 mm. long, smooth, articulated at the base.
Shrub or liane, 1 m. high or higher, with latex, glabrous; stems flattened, sometimes 4-lined, glaucous-green and smooth at first, becoming blackish-purple, finely lenticullate-rugulose.
Disk cylindric or conic-cylindric, with top ± thickened and margin free and sometimes ± undulate or concave, surrounding the base of the ovary.
Fruit orange to reddish, globose, c. 2–3 cm. in diam., smooth to rugulose or somewhat muricate or with wart-like emergences, 2–3 seeded.
Petals orange to yellow, 2–3·5 mm. long, ovate to elliptic-oblong, sessile or shortly unguiculate, rounded, entire or subentire.
Stamens 3, with filaments broadened at the base; anthers dehiscing by 2 oblique clefts sometimes confluent at the apex.
Ovary ovoid-globose, with style c. 2 mm. long, slender; stigma entire, punctiform; ovules 2 per loculus.
