Characteristics

Shrub or small tree or liane, 1-4(25) m high, without latex, glabrous; stems with paired raised lines or rarely subterete, olive-green and smooth or slightly rugulose at first, becoming terete, purplish to grey-brown or brown and smooth or with ± prominent lenticels. Leaves opposite or alternate (on climbing shoots), petiolate; lamina dark green, paler below, glossy on both surfaces, 5-10.2(12.3) x (1.7)2.2-4(4.8) cm, lanceolate or oblong-lanceolate to ovate, acute or acutely to subobtusely acuminate at the apex, with margin entire or shallowly rounded-denticulate, cuneate at the base, chartaceous to softly coriaceous, with (7)9-11 lateral nerves and densely reticulate venation varying in prominence, more prominent below; petiole (3)4-6(8) mm long, with margins straight or slightly undulating; stipules absent. Flowers 1-5(8), axillary, in sessile fascicles, bisexual, 5-7 mm in diam.; buds 1.5-2.5(3) mm long, broadly ovoid; pedicels 3-10 mm long, smooth, articulated at the base. Sepals pale green with paler or reddish denticulate or ciliolate margin, c. 1 mm long, subequal, semicircular, rounded, free. Petals yellow or greenish-yellow, 2-3 mm long, oblong to elliptic or ovate and slightly unguiculate, rounded, entire or with margin partly ciliolate or denticulate. Disk greenish-yellow, cylindric or convex-cylindric, usually without depressions, surrounding or enveloping the ovary. Stamens 3, with filaments slender; anthers dehiscing by 2 oblique clefts confluent at the apex. Ovary subglobose or 3-lobed, with style narrowly pyramidal; stigma entire; ovules 2 per loculus. Fruit orange to orange-red, globose even when immature, 1.2-2(2.9) cm in diam., smooth, 1(2-3)-seeded.

A creeper or liane. Although often only 4 m long it can grow 25 m long. The stem often has 2 raised lines. The leaves are opposite or alternate on climbing shoots. The fruit has a sweet edible pulp. The leaf is dark green but more pale underneath. They are 5-10 cm long by 3-4 cm wide. They are narrowly sword shaped and taper to the tip. The flowers are in groups of 1-5 in the axils of leaves. They are 5-7 mm across and contain both sexes. The sepals are green with red edges and the petals are yellowish. The fruit are orange to red. They are round and 1-2 cm across. There are 1-3 seeds.
