Leaves opposite or subopposite (alternate on climbing shoots), petiolate; lamina glossy above, paler and dull below, 5·3–11(15) × 3–6·4(9) cm., broadly elliptic to oblong-elliptic or obovate, obtuse or shortly acuminate to rounded or retuse at the apex, with margin entire or very shallowly undulate-denticulate, cuneate at the base, coriaceous, with 6–8(10) lateral nerves and densely reticulate venation prominent below but not or less so above; petiole 6–12 mm. long, with margins straight; stipules c. 1 mm. long, narrowly triangular, subentire, caducous.
Shrub or small tree or liane, with latex, glabrous; stems with faint paired lines, yellow-green, smooth and flattened at first, becoming terete, greyish-brown or reddish, with lenticels scarcely visible except on young shoots.
Sepals unequal, outer 2 very small, inner 3 c. 1 mm. long, free, broadly ovate to semicircular, rounded or irregular, with margin thin, ciliolate-denticulate to subentire.
Petals greenish-yellow, c. 2·5 mm. long, oblong to obovate, sessile, rounded or irregular, subentire or ± irregularly ciliolate-fimbriate, ± reflexed at anthesis.
Flowers c. 8–16, bisexual, in axillary sessile fascicles; buds c. 2 mm. long, subglobose; pedicels 4–8 mm. long, smooth, articulated at the base.
Stamens 3(4), with filaments broadened at the base; anthers dehiscing by 2 widely oblique confluent clefts (almost forming a straight line).
Fruit orange, 2–2·5 cm. in diam., globose, smooth to rugose or covered with wart-like emergences, ± markedly 3-crested.
Ovary ovoid-3-gonous, with style c. 1 mm. long, conic; stigma entire, punctiform; ovules 2(3) per loculus.
A scrambling shrub. It grows 2 m high. The fruit pulp is orange-red when ripe. It is sweet and edible.
