Shrub, up to 3 m high; not blackening when dried; branches, leaves and flowers alternate. Stems much branched, branches ash-grey or light brown; leafy. Leaves sessile, amplexicaul; blade broadly triangular, spurred, the upper ones rounded and thick, close to each other; cauline leaves and those of buds pubescent, soon glabrous, irregularly rugose in dried state. Flowers: solitary; bracteoles suborbicular, keeled on back, with membranous margins, mostly ± densely covered with appressed hairs; perianth hairy to glabrescent, the front part with a short triangular middle portion, wings delicate, many-nerved, sinuately lobed, light brown; Nov.-Mar.
