Characteristics

Perennial, dwarf shrub, ± 0.6 m high, stems woody, light brown, with corky bark; branches and branchlets yellow-brown. Leaves alternate, fleshy, tuberculate (wartlike), with rounded, white epidermal cells containing salt (a salt tasting species). Bracts and bracteoles with a dorsal keel and membranous margins. Flowers evenly spaced in axillary clusters on branches and densely arranged on branchlets; yellowish green. Sepals 5, with keeled, green centre, forming wings in fruit, margins hyaline. Stamens 5. Ovary ovoid-globose; style bifid.
