Dwarf shrub or shrub, up to 0.9 m high; plants glabrous, more rarely pubescent; not blackening when dried; branches, leaves and flowers alternate. Stems thick and woody below; branchlets slender, glabrous or slightly puberulent at base of leaves and flowers when young. Leaves sessile; succulent; blade linear, up to 5 x 1 mm; floral leaves somewhat longer than bracteoles. Flowers: solitary in axils of leaves; perianth (excluding wings) ± 1.2 mm in diameter, yellow; Jan.-Apr.

Perennial, indurated, dwarf shrub, 0.2-1.5 m high. Leaves alternate, scarious, fleshy, small, up to 2 mm long. Bracts ± ovate, keeled. Bracteoles ± ovate, fleshy, concave, carinate on outer surface. Flowers yellowish, solitary in axils of leaves, ± 2.5 x 1 mm. Sepals 5, with keeled, green centre, forming wings in fruit, margins hyaline. Stamens 5. Ovary ovoid-globose; style bifid. Flowering time Jan., June.
