Shrub, up to 1 m high; not blackening when dried; branches, leaves and flowers opposite; leaves, bracteoles and perianth covered with appressed, straight, rather thick hairs, often rubbed off later. Stems procumbent, spreading and rooting under sand, ultimate branches erect. Leaves scale-like, fleshy, swollen at base; blade ovate, 1.5-3.0 x 1.75 mm, apex subacute, base spurred, margins hyaline, minutely ciliate, glabrescent. Flowers: solitary, sessile, axillary forming spike-like inflorescences at apices of branchlets; bracteoles leaf-like; perianth segments ovate-oblong to narrowly ovate-oblong, small tubercles at base and without wings in fruit; Oct.-Mar. Seeds vertical.
