Low spreading shrub about 0.1-2 m high, with profuse intricate stiff woody branches; stems more or less densely pubescent to puberulous when young. Leaves alternate, scale-like, often closely imbricate, fleshy, very small, 1.25-2 x 1-1.5 mm, with more or less dense short appressed silky pubescence on back, green and thickened in centre, hyaline-margined, obtusely pointed at apex. Flowers yellow-green, solitary in upper axils, about 3 mm long. Perianth lobes 5, ovate, each with puberulous central thickened green area from which the wings arise in fruit. Fruit (including wings) c. 4-10 mm in diam., the wings encircling the fruit, usually more or less irregular in shape and size from reniform to obovate or even bifid, to c. 1.5-4 mm long and c. 2.5-6 mm wide, glabrous, closely veined and with a sheeny surface.
