Characteristics

Lemma 1·8-2·2 cm. long (excluding callus and awns), linear, coriaceous, glabrous, very finely scaberulous, margins membranous and involute in the lower part; callus 3·5-4mm. long, elongate, acute, densely and shortly barbate; column absent; awns 3, subequal, 7·5-10 cm. long, scaberulous, flattened and slightly grooved on the inner surface.

Panicle up to 40 cm. long, rigid, erect, narrow, slightly contracted, with few spikelets; axis nearly glabrous, striate, compressed, branches solitary or 2-nate, smooth or nearly smooth, bearing 1-few spikelets towards the ends.
Glumes subequal, narrowly linear-lanceolate, chartaceous below, with a membranous acute apex; the inferior 2·5-3·3 cm. long, 5-nerved; the superior c. 2·5 cm. long, 3-nerved.
Leaf-sheaths lax, smooth, often somewhat glossy, estriate in the lower part, finely puberulous and striate upwards.
Leaf-laminae up to 35 x 0·2-0·4 cm., pilose at the base, densely scaberulous above, finely puberulous below.
Perennial up to 1-2 m. high, densely caespitose, with numerous intervaginal innovations.
Culms erect, c. 2 mm. in diam., simple, very firm, solid, terete, glabrous, striate.
Caryopsis 9 mm. long, linear, dorso-ventrally compressed, grooved, dark-brown.
Ligule a dense rim of short cilia; auricles barbate.
