Species

Angiosperms > Asparagales > Orchidaceae > Satyrium

Characteristics

Plants slender to stout, erect, (50-) 120-220 (-330) mm tall; leaves 1-3 near soil surface, partly spreading, ovate, up to 12-65 mm long. Inflorescences mostly elongate and 6-150-flowered; bracts spreading then incurved, 2-10 times the length of the 3-6 mm long ovary. Flowers dull white, faintly greenish and with a pale purple patch above the entrance to each spur. Sepals ovate; median 1-3 mm long; laterals partly spreading, 2-4 mm long. Petals deltoid, obtuse, slightly shorter than the median sepal. Lip broadly ovate, forming a widely bilobed hood, apex curved over the front of the gynostemium, almost touching the median sepal and thus dividing the floral entrance into 2; spurs yellowish green, c. 1 mm long. Each pollinium with a minute, globose viscidium; stigma deeply bilobed, strongly curved over the rostellum, c. 0.6 mm long; rostellum broadly deltoid obtuse, with spreading lateral arms.
