Characteristics

A terrestrial herb 3–8.5 dm. high, glabrous except for the roots.. Tubers ovoid-fusiform to ellipsoid, 2–5 cm. long, 1–2 cm. in diameter, tomentose.. Roots slender, flexuous, sparsely pubescent.. Sterile stem up to 10 cm. long, 3–5-leaved; lower 1–2 leaves sheath-like, the upper leaves lanceolate or oblanceolate, acute, up to 8–23 cm. long and 2–3 cm. broad.. Fertile stem slender or stout, covered by sheathing leaves; sheaths 7–12, lanceolate or broadly lanceolate, up to 6–12 cm. long and 1.5–3 cm. broad.. Inflorescence cylindrical, 10–24 cm. long, 1.5–2.5 cm. in diameter, densely many-flowered; bracts soon reflexed, lanceolate, acute, 1–2.5 cm. long.. Flowers curved outwards, orange-red to brownish-red; pedicel with ovary curved, 6–8 mm. long.. Sepals and petals deflexed, united with one another and with the lip in their basal third.. Intermediate sepal oblong-oblanceolate, rounded, 5–6 mm. long, 1 mm. broad; laterals obliquely oblong-elliptical, obtuse, equalling the intermediate, 1–2 mm. broad; all 3-veined.. Petals as intermediate sepal, but smaller, 1-veined, margins ciliolate.. Lip ellipsoid or obovoid, the mouth narrow, the apex shortly reflexed, 4.5–6 mm. long.. Column 4 mm long; stigma 1.5 × 2 mm; rostellum mid-lobe spoon-shaped from a narrow base, much longer than side lobes.
Sterile shoot 3–5-leaved; lowermost 1–2 leaves sheathing; upper leaves up to 20 × 3 cm, lanceolate or oblanceolate.
