An orchid that grows in the ground. It grows 1 m high. It has long tubers 3-6 cm long by 1-2 cm wide. The leafy stem has 3-5 leaves and the lower ones sheath the stem. The upper leaves are 6-15 cm long by 2-4.5 cm wide and they are sword shaped. The flowering stalk is 23 cm long. There are many white to red flowers.
Column 3.5–5 mm long, curved; stigmas 1.5–3.5 mm; rostellum mid-lobe varying from slightly longer to much longer than side lobes.
Median sepal 4.5–7 × c. 1 mm, oblong, rounded at apex; lateral sepals oblique and slightly longer, c. 2 mm wide.
Spurs 8.5–17 mm long, parallel to ovary, sometimes with a pair of vestigial spurs c. 1 mm long in front of them.
Sterile shoot 3–5-leaved; lowermost 1–3 leaves sheathing; upper leaves 6–15 × 2–4.5 cm, lanceolate or ovate.
Sepals and petals curled under, joined to each other and lip for one quarter to one third of their length.
Lip 5.5–7.5 mm long, globose, the apex slightly reflexed, fleshy with a narrow mouth.
Inflorescence 8–30 × 1.5–2 cm, narrowly cylindrical, densely many-flowered.
Terrestrial herb 40–80 cm high; tubers to 5.5 × 1.5 cm, ellipsoid.
Flowering stem with 10–15 sheathing leaves up to 10 cm long.
Bracts up to 25 mm long at base of inflorescence, reflexed.
A terrestrial herb up to 3 ft. high
Flowers deep red, pink or white.
Petals 4–6.5 × 0.5–1 mm.
Ovary 6–8 mm long.
