Characteristics

A terrestrial herb 4–35 cm. high, glabrous except for the roots.. Tubers ellipsoid or fusiform, 8–16 mm. long, 7–9 mm. in diameter, ± tomentose.. Roots slender, pubescent.. Stem erect, slender to rather stout, leafy.. Leaves 4–6, the lowermost usually sheath-like, the next 2 ± spreading, ovate, elliptical or broadly lanceolate, acute, up to 3.5–7 cm. long and 1.7–3.5 cm. broad, the upper ones much smaller, adpressed to the stem.. Inflorescence somewhat pyramidal, 2–6 cm. long, 1.5–2.5 cm. in diameter, densely 8-to many-flowered; bracts spreading, lanceolate, acute, 6–15 mm. long, the lower ones exceeding the flowers.. Flowers half-spreading, sessile, pink to reddish-purple or greenish; ovary straight, 5 mm. long.. Sepals and petals projecting forwards, united to one another and to the lip for ± 1 mm. at their base.. Intermediate sepal oblong-lanceolate, obtuse, 3.5–4.5 mm. long, scarcely 2 mm. broad; laterals obliquely elliptical, rounded, a little longer and broader than the intermediate.. Petals lanceolate, subacute, 3–4 mm. long, 1.5 mm. broad; all tepals 1-nerved.. Lip hooded, obtuse, 3.5–5 mm. long, with a wide mouth, without spurs.. Column 2–3 mm. high, curved, the stalk equalling the fertile part; stigma erect, nearly orbicular, just over 1 mm. broad, rostellum very short and broad, obscurely 3-lobed, the middle lobe very broad and rounded.
