Species

Angiosperms > Asparagales > Orchidaceae > Satyrium

Characteristics

A terrestrial herb 4.5–9 dm. high, glabrous except for the roots.. Tubers ellipsoid to elongate-ovoid, 4–4.5 cm. long, 1–2 cm. in diameter, densely tomentose.. Roots slender, flexuous, pubescent.. Sterile stem to 7 cm. long, 3–4-leaved; 2 lower leaves sheath-like, obtuse, the upper leaves lanceolate to oblanceolate, acute, up to 17–19 cm. long and 3.5–5.5 cm. broad.. Fertile stem slender to rather stout, almost covered by sheathing leaves; sheaths 6–10, lanceolate, acute, up to 5–12 cm. long and 1.5–3 cm. broad.. Inflorescence narrowly cylindrical, 11–30 cm. long, 2 cm. in diameter, rather loosely many-flowered; bracts soon reflexed, lanceolate, acute, 8–27 mm. long, the lower ones longer than the flowers.. Flowers curved outwards, sessile, green or greenish-white, becoming brown; ovary stout, 5–7 mm. long.. Sepals and petals much decurved, united to one another and to the lip in their basal third.. Intermediate sepal elliptical-oblong, rounded, 4–5 mm. long, scarcely 1 mm. broad; laterals obliquely oblanceolate-oblong, obtuse, a little longer than the intermediate, ± 1.5 mm. broad, 2-veined.. Petals oblanceolate, rounded, shorter than sepals, 0.5 mm. broad, 1-veined.. Lip ellipsoid, with a narrow mouth, the apex shortly recurved, 5.5–8 mm. long.. Spurs parallel to ovary, 6–7.5 mm. long, ± 1 mm. in diameter, scarcely tapering.. Column inside lip, much curved, 3.5–4 mm. high; stigma erect, ± concave, transversely elliptical, 1.5 mm. high, 2 mm. broad, rostellum 3-lobed, the middle-lobe much larger than the tooth-like side lobes, broadly spoon-shaped from a narrow base, apex upcurved.
