Characteristics

A terrestrial herb 2–6 dm. high, glabrous except for the roots.. Tubers not seen.. Roots slender, flexuous, sparsely pubescent.. Stem erect, slender or somewhat robust, with 1 basal leaf and several sheaths along its length.. Basal leaf adpressed to the ground, ovate or broadly ovate, ± heart-shaped, acute or shortly acuminate, 2.5–11 cm. long, 2–10 cm. broad, fleshy; sheathing leaves 3–7(–11), lanceolate, acute, 2.8–6.5 cm. long, 6–16 mm. broad, thin in texture.. Inflorescence cylindrical, 3–18 cm. long, 2–3 cm. in diameter, rather loosely 8-to many-flowered; bracts erect at first, reflexed later, lanceolate, acute, 1–3.5 cm. long, the lower longer than the flowers.. Petals similar to the intermediate sepal but a little shorter; all tepals 3-veined.. Lip very convex and hooded, the apex slightly rolled back, 6–9 mm. long, and nearly as broad when spread out, 2-spurred at the base.. Spurs slender, 1.2–1.8 cm. long, scarcely 1.5 mm. in diameter at the base.. Column erect, contained within the lip, 4.5–6.5 mm. high, the stalk slender, longer than the fertile part; anther-loculi pendent, ellipsoid; stigma erect, semi-orbicular, 2 mm. broad by 1–1.5 mm. high, rostellum broad, shortly and almost equally 3-toothed, the middle tooth shortly bifid.
