Characteristics

Stiff, erect perennial, many-stemmed, to 60 cm tall, with minute, glandular hairs and long, stiff, simple hairs; stems striate. Basal leaves sessile, narrowly elliptic, entire, with lamina to 22 mm long, to 6 mm wide; cauline leaves ±triangular, with lamina to 4 mm long. Flowers in distant thyrses or racemes to 15 cm long; bracts as cauline leaves; peduncle 1.7-5.5 cm long; bracteoles ovate-elliptic, 1-2 mm long. Sepals triangular, 0.2-0.35 mm long, basally connate. Corolla 15-25 mm long, with stiff, ±appressed hairs outside, bearded inside, pale mauve with darker lines; barbulae thin, simple; wings c. 1 mm wide. Indusium c. 3 mm wide, dense beard ±equalling bristles on lips. Fruit globular to ellipsoidal, 5 mm long, tuberculate, ribbed, hairy.
