Characteristics

Spreading shrub to 1.5 m high and 3 m wide, apparently glabrous, viscid when young. Leaves ovate to orbicular, mostly dentate, thick; lamina 1.5–8 cm long, 3–43 mm wide; petiole ± decurrent. Flowers in terminal spikes to 5.5 cm long; bracts leafy below, reduced above, mostly not exceeding flowers; bracteoles linear to triangular, to 4 mm long. Sepals united in a tube, sinuate, 0.3–1 mm long. Corolla 8–11 mm long, glabrous or shortly hairy basally outside, bearded inside, white, blue or pale purple; barbulae papillate apically; wings 0.5–1 mm wide. Ovary 2-locular, 1–2 mm long; indusium 1.5–2 mm wide, mostly glabrous except lips. Fruit globular, to 5 mm diam., rugose, with 3–5 swollen ribs, usually glabrous.
