Characteristics

Erect, many-stemmed perennial to 50 cm tall, pubescent to glabrous; stock thick, retaining dead leaf bases. Leaves mostly towards base of stem, linear to oblanceolate, broad basally, entire or few-toothed, thick; lamina 6-20 cm long, 1-10 mm wide. Flowers in terminal, scapose spikes to 10 cm long; bracts lanceolate, to 4 cm long; bracteoles linear-lanceolate, to 6 mm long. Sepals united in a tube, toothed, to 2 mm long. Corolla 7-15 mm long, with straight hairs outside, bearded inside, white to pale blue with brownish markings; barbulae prominent, papillate apically. Ovary 2-locular; indusium to 2 mm wide, sparsely hairy on both surfaces. Fruit subglobular, to 4 mm diam., rugose, pubescent or glabrous, with 2 sterile cavities.
