Characteristics

Subshrub to 50 cm tall, with short, soft hairs. Leaves sessile, obovate to narrowly elliptic, dentate or entire, surface usually hidden beneath hairs; lamina 8-55 mm long, 4-21 mm wide. Flowers in terminal spikes to 20 cm long; bracts leaf-like but smaller; bracteoles linear-deltoid, 4-15 mm long. Sepals semiorbicular, c. 1 mm long, connate. Corolla 14-24 mm long, with short, simple hairs outside, bearded inside, blue or mauve; barbulae numerous, simple; wings c. 1 mm wide. Ovary 2-locular; indusium 2-2.5 mm long, short white hairs above often equalling lips. Fruit obovoid, 4-5 mm long, rugose towards base, obscurely grooved, pubescent, with 2 sterile cavities.
