Characteristics

Herb, often prostrate with stems to 50 cm long, hispid, sometimes scabrous, hairs at 90°. Leaves sessile, cuneate to linear, sometimes recurved, usually dentate; lamina 1.2-10 cm long, 3-17 mm wide. Flowers in racemes or thyrses to 30 cm long; bracts leafy; peduncle curved, 2-4.5 cm long; bracteoles linear, 5-10 mm long, entire. Sepals linear, 4-14 mm long, free. Corolla mostly 10-27 mm long, with short, white hairs and long, stiff, yellow hairs outside, densely bearded inside, deep purple, yellow in throat; barbulae simple; wings striate, c. 2-3 mm wide. Indusium c. 3 mm wide, with sparse, sometimes purplish beard. Fruit obovoid, 5-6 mm long, striate-tuberculate, hairy.
