Characteristics

Weak, ascending shrub to 1.8 m tall, glabrous or hairy. Leaves sessile, linear to oblanceolate, broad basally, usually entire; lamina 2-12 cm long, 3-17 mm wide. Flowers in loose, terminal spikes to 20 cm long; bracts linear-elliptic, 1-4 cm long; bracteoles lanceolate, mostly more than 5 mm long. Sepals united in a tube, undulate, to 1 mm long, fringed by glandular hairs. Corolla 18-25 mm long, glabrous outside, densely bearded inside, pale blue to white; barbulae numerous, papillate apically. Ovary 4-locular; indusium 2-3 mm wide, hairs above short, white. Fruit globular to ovoid, to 11 mm diam., grooved, otherwise smooth, glabrous; locules 4 fertile and 4 sterile.
